Each rattleback has a mind of its own...
Some spin only clockwise, others only counter-clockwise. If you try to spin it the other way, it wobbles and starts spinning in the original direction!
Wood: Sugar maple
Dimensions: About 20 cm (8 in)
Spinning direction: Counter-clockwise
As the emblematic tree of Canada, the sugar maple owes its name to the sweet sap from which syrup is derived. Its extremely hard wood, an ivory colour, lends itself particularly well to wood burning. It is also valued for its extremely smooth surface which is obtained through polishing.
These two intertwined snakes on the rattleback are a reproduction of the Book of Kells (9th century). They are each looking in different directions. Which way should they turn?
